Starting a Shopify store is exciting — but most beginners make the same costly mistakes. Here’s what to watch out for and how to fix each one before it hurts your sales.
Shopify makes it incredibly easy to launch an online store. But “easy to start” doesn’t mean “hard to mess up.” After reviewing hundreds of beginner Shopify stores, we’ve found 10 mistakes that almost every new merchant makes — and they’re all fixable once you know what to look for.
1. Skipping the custom domain
Your store launches on a myshopify.com subdomain by default. Many beginners leave it there. This kills trust — customers see it and question whether you’re a real business. Domains cost as little as $10/year and you can connect one in minutes from Settings → Domains.
2. Using blurry or stolen product images
Low-quality images are the #1 reason shoppers leave without buying. Use your own photos (minimum 2048×2048px) or source free ones from Unsplash and Pexels. Never pull images from a competitor’s site — it’s copyright infringement and bad for SEO.
Pro tip: Shopify automatically compresses images — upload the highest resolution you have and let it optimize.
3. Ignoring SEO from day one
Every product page, collection, and blog post has an SEO title and meta description field. Most beginners leave these blank. Fill them in with relevant keywords and you’ll rank significantly faster than competitors who skip this step.
Quick SEO checklist for every page:
- Include your main keyword in the page title
- Write a unique meta description (150–160 characters)
- Use your keyword naturally in the first paragraph
- Add alt text to every image
4. Not setting up abandoned cart emails
On average, 70% of shoppers abandon their carts. Shopify’s built-in abandoned checkout emails recover many of these sales automatically. Go to Settings → Notifications and enable them today — it takes two minutes and costs nothing.
5. Choosing the wrong theme for your niche
A theme that works for a fashion brand looks terrible for a B2B tool store. Browse the Shopify Theme Store filtered by your industry and look for themes with fast load times (check reviews). Your theme is your storefront — it shapes first impressions.
6. Not testing the checkout on mobile
Over 60% of ecommerce traffic is mobile. Yet many store owners only test checkout on desktop. Add a product to your cart on your phone and complete a test purchase. Check every step for broken buttons, tiny text, or confusing flows.
7. Hiding the return policy
Shoppers look for a return policy before buying. If they can’t find it, they leave. Add a link to your policy in your footer and on your product pages. Shopify has a free policy generator under Settings → Policies.
8. Installing too many apps
Every app you install adds code to your store — which slows it down. A slow store loses customers (Google research shows a 1-second delay drops conversions by 7%). Audit your apps monthly and remove any you’re not actively using.
Pro tip: Check your store speed score at Online Store → Themes → View report. Aim for 50+ on mobile.
9. Not connecting Google Analytics
Without analytics, you’re flying blind. You don’t know where your traffic comes from, which products people view, or where they drop off. Connect Google Analytics 4 via Online Store → Preferences on day one — the data you collect now will be invaluable later.
10. Giving up too soon
Most successful Shopify stores took 3–6 months to get their first consistent sales. If you’re not seeing results after two weeks, that’s completely normal. Focus on one traffic channel, study your analytics, and iterate. Patience and consistency beat overnight strategies every time.
